We took a few days off due to some officers on vacation. We returned with some new members and a full 30-Summoner squad. We pulled an Alliance that was still in the five million range, so a roughly even match. They did well on Exploration, outpacing us through the middle of the match. With less than seven hours to go, our first Boss fell, and then an hour later, the second did as well. On our part, their Mini-Bosses were starting to be picked up, and we were within a few percentage points of their Exploration, so it was far from over. Until it was. We were unable to push another Boss KO, sliding into a loss.
9/29/17 vs. Marvela Team Poland (91,224 to 147,144) LOSS
We were back down to Intermediate Tier, so maybe we would have some better luck. Not really, as we had some officers in areas where they were unable to log on, leaving us with some exploitable holes in our Defense. They were exploited big time, as MTP was able to clear maps without much problems, giving them a towering Exploration score. With less than seven hours left, they took their first Boss, and the other two didn't have much to protect them from more attacks. Soon after, another of our Bosses was down. By this point, they were nearing 100% Exploration, and we were not, so it was pretty much a done deal.
9/27/17 vs. We Are Groot - Intermediate 2 (92,230 to 130,960) LOSS
More tinkering with the scoring formula occured during the break, lowering the impact of Diversity. We'd see how that would play out. We had just entered Tier 7, making our difficulty Hard, and in the early going, we saw it wasn't as easy to advance. Our opponent was part of a larger "We Are Groot" collective of Alliances, and they passed six million in Rating, so they would be tough adversaries. Exploration stayed early, but KOs of champions were occurring on both sides, so it looked like 100% clearance was not going to happen in this Tier at Hard difficulty. The first Boss KO went to them with about five hours left in the contest. We had a slight Exploration edge and had reached their Bosses in all groups, but plenty of nodes were still linked, and the PIs were high and intimidating. Our assault yielded no fruit, and we were unable to take down a Boss. They sealed the win with a second Boss KO, leaving us in the dust.
9/24/17 vs. Marvel's Fight Club (173,919 to 154,218) WIN
There was something familiar about this Alliance, but our records showed we hadn't faced them before. Their Rating was a bit lower than ours, but they definitely had a chance. We had done very well as two Battlegroups, winning all four of those matches, but we had some new recruits, and I didn't like sidelining people, so we were back to three groups, but not quite up to 10 per group, so we had some work to do. They did a good job in Exploration, passing us up by a good margin, so had to make it up in the end. Both Alliances advanced well, tying up at 91% Exploration with three hours left to go, but no Boss KOs yet. No one was rushing, but KOmaggedon was probably around the corner. It soon began, with them taking our first Boss. Two minutes later, our Battlegroup Three struck them down. Exploration was still tied at 93%, keeping it close in the final hours. Sensing the closeness of the match, we took down the final two of their Bosses, even with the Exploration lead. They also took down another ours. Good thing we pushed, because we won by less than a Boss KO. We had only 135 Defenders placed, and their Diversity was greater, so if we had stayed with two Bosses only, it would have been a loss.
9/22/17 vs. Primordial Remnants (97,873 to 92,405) WIN
This was a rematch against a team we had faced back in October of 2016. We had been running two groups back then as well, but we were a young Alliance in Tier 16 on our way up. We had won that match and scored the most points and Defense Kills in our history against them. Still, a lot of time had passed, and they had a higher War Rating now, so we couldn't count on an easy win. The first few hours were slow Exploration on both sides, but it was the weekend. Things began to pick up, and both teams reached Bosses, but were unable to clear all 10 mini-Bosses between them. The extra links meant we each only managed one Boss KO each, but in the final tally, we edged them out in all categories but Defenders Placed for a solid win. Still, we had blown them out in our last match, so they had all in all improved their efforts. Next time, we might not be so lucky.
9/20/17 vs. traxwsex (119,281 to 80,845) WIN
This Alliance was roughly our Rating, but they had 30 people, so our Average Member Rating was better. They were named after not their Leader, but one of their Officers. They had the traditional two Nightcrawler Bosses, but none of the usual Mystic Class mini-Bosses, so it was possible they were trying out for some Diversity points. At Tier 9, we could only see the identity of the six Boss spots. We had a slow start, so they passed us in Exploration early, but we roared back during the middle of the War and gained a large Exploration lead. They managed the first Boss KO in Battlegroup One, leaving up two nodes and taking down the Boss anyway with about six hours to go, but we had over a 20% Exploration lead, and we felt like we were in a good position to clear at least one Battlegroup 100%. With four hours left, we took down both Bosses with two minutes of each other and had a good shot at making 99% Exploration for the War. Plus we had made some Diversity changes to give us a few extra points, so even 100% on their part shouldn't have kept us down. They seemed content to sit on what they had, not really pushing further, so we ended up beating them in every category for a decisive victory.
9/17/17 vs. ZEN (94,652 to 93,567) WIN
We took some time off to get some recruits, but none appeared, so we continued to run two War Groups. The next opponent was another Seven Million Rating Alliance! This one was an old one, having been founded 2 1/2 years ago, just four months after the start of the game. They had a very deep roster to contend with and 26 officers to one member. We were able to hold our own, even with some officers sitting out to get down to 20 Summoners. With five hours to go, Battlegroup Two had made great inroads, getting to 98% Exploration and only having one link up to the Boss. Overall, we had a nice Exploration lead, but their Defense boasted some very high-point Defenders on the remaining nodes, and their Attack team still had a lot of health to finish us off. With about three hours left, they made a strong push, closing the Exploration gap. That angered Battlegroup Two, so they swatted down the last node and the Magik Boss, getting 100% Exploration in their group! And we still had an Exploration lead. They edged up to close the gap and got one our Bosses in the process, but in the end, we had a slim 1.5% advantage, giving us the win over some highly formidable opponents!
9/13/17 vs. Laid back, Semi-Retired (118,150 to 113,727) WIN
Some members had decided to take a break from the game, so we were understaffed to do three War Groups. We opted to do only two. This had dropped our Rating closer to four million, but that didn't stop us from being matched with this Alliance of over seven million! We had dropped to Normal mode, so the Buffs were less severe, and it now displayed every Champion in advance. The semi-retired folks were still scrappy, and their Battlegroup Two penetrated to one Mini-Boss almost immediately to get things over with, but they were repulsed. Both teams were fine on Exploration, moving at will. With 10 hours left, Battlegroup One also used penetration, bypassing all Mini-Bosses but one, and KOing the quadruple-charged Boss without taking any kills! But we answered and took down their Boss with most of the nodes on as well. With nine hours left, they took the second Boss, but we answered again. Now it was just Exploration, and their early focus on penetration meant we had a strong lead there with our more spread-out advancement. With seven hours left, we only had a few more nodes to pick up to get 99%. (Okay, so we had missed one in one Battlegroup that wasn't coming back.) We met that benchmark while the LbSR team had bypassed too many nodes and settled for 92%. This new War didn't allow skipping nodes, so we got the victory.
9/10/17 vs. Lords of Dragons (114,028 to 142,770) LOSS
We were short a couple of members, and again we faced a higher Rating Alliance than ourselves. We started off fairly even, as usual, but they began to pull ahead in Exploration. Even more distressing, our Defense was not taking down enough of their Champions. They were reaching the ends of the maps with fully charged rosters, so we had to expect all Bosses to fall. Battlegroup One fell first, with them taking 100% Exploration there and downing our Boss with about six hours left in the War. That was all the activity on the Bosses. They had a strong Exploration lead, so they didn't bother taking down any more Bosses. We had a few Mini-Boss nodes still clogging the way, so we were unable to get a knockout blow ourselves. They had beaten us in all categories, so it was a well deserved even. Et tu Diversity? Controvery continued to rage in the message boards about the new War system, so we expected some changes to be coming soon.
9/8/17 vs. Teamwork (116,838 to 160,378) LOSS
Teamwork always wins the day, so we faced off against this team with some hesitation. Their extra million points in Rating didn't help us either. Their Defense proved to be a problem for us, as we didn't get the same penetration we did previously, with many of us stalling out before even getting to the Mini-Bosses. This left too many links on the Bosses, and we ended up with no Boss KOs. They edged us out in most other categories as well, giving them a strong victory. Our Diversity was the lone bright spot, and we took our Skirmish gold and limped away for next time. What did I say about Teamwork?
9/6/17 vs. PossessedVenoms (187,059 to 161,233) WIN
After a break, War returned with a new Map, and we were eager to see how it worked. It also coincided with our year anniversary as an Alliance, so we figured we were ready. The Map smacked us upside the head with plenty of portal options, and our opponent was over six million Rating, but we had just bumped against five million Rating, so that wasn't so bad. The real world intruded, as a tropical storm menaced one member, the flu took down another, and yet another was just missing. We ventured out into the new maze. At seven hours left in the Map, Exploration was good, over 70% by both Alliances, but no Boss KOs yet. The new 5 Mini-Bosses might have something to do with that. We actually managed the edge in Exploration even down a few members, and we still had health and desire. With over three hours left, BaumanZ struck down the Hyperion Boss in Battlegroup One with two Mini-Bosses still powering him up! Not to be outdone, their Battlegroup One struck down our Boss 30 minutes later, but they needed to take down all 5 Mini-Bosses first, so not quite as impressive. At this point, we had over 90% Exploration and the lead in that category. With 90 minutes left, Aanniill cleaned up the end of Battlegroup Three for another KO. Demon Shanky took care of Battlegroup Two's Boss 30 minutes later, giving us a clean sweep, and we had reached 96% Exploration. The PossessedVenoms squad took down another Boss with 30 minutes to go, but we had the Exploration lead. Would the new Diversity points decide the match? It only would if they could get the last Boss. They were unable to, giving us a strong victory in our first new War map!
